I just got in a few samples of the JellyBean Sea collection. I just love them so much. They are so fun, colorful, and they remind me of fantastic sun and sand that is no where to be found in frigid, frigid Iowa!!!

My dress adventures

Well, I decided that it was time to sew a few things that I could actually wear. Luckily, I had a bunch of yards of jersey knit stored up and just dying to become something. :)
So, I have this night gown that I just love. It's polka dot, cotton knit material, Hanes Her Way all- the-way......kind of old and faded to boot! However, since I bought it, I always thought it would be a great dress if only it wasn't all of those things above.
So, dress #1 was made with that as the pattern. I laid out the knit on the carpet, traced the night gown and googled how to put elastic in. Who knew it would work!!??
Also, last week I had started to braid all of these strips of scrap fabric together with the intention of making a scarf with the TONS of leftover knit I had from making these bags back in December for the Home Ec sale.

I added that to the neckline to fancy it up a bit, and voila!!!
I just love it.

The second dress came soon after. After all, that wasn't so hard....so why not make another one, right? I have a Banana Republic Dress that I love. It fits so well and is just a flattering fit. I like it so much that I want like 10 of them JUST LIKE IT. So, I decided to try my hand at that dress too. I followed the same process, tracing out the general pattern and googling how to make shirring at the waist. (by the way, I didn't know that's what it was called until I Googled it!) The chalk is still visible in this shot. oops.

I've had this cute little buttons for about 6 years that I bought at the thrift store. Turns out, they were the perfect detail for the neck line.

Also, I fell in love with this trim at Home Ec. So, I put that around the hem line. I just love the way it turned out!

I kind of can't believe I made these and that they actually fit! I might just be on to something here!

Here's the collection I'm working on centered around the beach, or an ocean theme. I just love the seaweed. it may be my favorite so far. I feel like it really hits the nail on the head as far as looking like what I want my work to look like. That's always a great feeling when you can live up to your expectations! :)

Spoonflower's contest is Roller Derby....I took this opportunity to explore a less "cute" design aesthetic and using the grittiness of relief printing to add to the nature of the design....I'm going to do more like this....maybe delicate subjects...flowers, etc in this way would be a great visual contradiction

The clematis plant out in our side yard is just SO SO beautiful...a bounty of purple flowers!!!...I had to take a moment to draw it this morning along with the lovely lovely ribbon grass that surrounds it. I am really enjoying drawing as a way to capture these moments in time this summer...I love this time of year and I can't think of a better way to be in the NOW than by sitting with these lovely little elements from time to time and immortalizing them in a drawing!

The last several times I have watched a fireworks display, the fireworks were over water. The reflections are always just SO beautiful and mesmerizing to me. That was the inspiration for this pattern!

I am working on incorporating paint chip samples into my still life paintings. I get a little thrill out of all that subtle mixing...here's a recent one from that. I also just recently finished a painting that has been in the works for YEARS! A little help from my printmaking background....intaglio wiping the surface of the left side with encaustic paint did just the trick along with capturing the BEAUTIFUL daffodils that so elegantly showed up after a long long winter!

These two are part of my submission to Runner's World. I have always loved their illustration selections. They have such a diverse representation of work in each magazine. I hope one day to have something published with them.

Having recently run a 5K in lovely Grinnell (setting a PR of 26:52!..yay!), and knowing how there is a constant battle for many runners between what you ate or drink before the race and the determination to finish quickly rather than stand in what are ALWAYS long lines at the port-o-potty's along the route....I thought I'd make an amusing tribute to those moments!

I'm working on a line of images that are this style. Here is the latest in the series!

When I was a kid, I would draw cartoon drawings non-stop. In each one, I would hide a little drawing of a bee. Also, when I was in 7th grade, I made a bumper sticker that won the parish-wide Drug-Free bumper sticker contest. Mine had a bee wearing red Converse and read "Let's "BEE" Drug-free." You can still see that thing on people's bumpers in Houma. I was so stoked and received a $100 gift certificate to the mall. Rad! I like to think the bee has come full circle.

I am trying to develop a daily practice of drawing that is free of strings.....meaning that at times I let fret and worry about if what I am doing is a good use of time, efficient, whether or not this sketching will be useful for something in the gallery or in designs, direct what I am making....THAT is not a good way to work. Inspiration comes in many forms and can be the result of a quick doodle. So, today, I spent the morning working on a little painting drawing of a few flowers from the yard.

I am really loving working on these. They really capture the essence of what I loved about all of my still life paintings....texture, pattern, juxtaposed spaces, fused elements, flattened elements .....it's coming together. I plan on making lots more.

This is a long overdue post. Now that the moving has transpired and I am settling in, I had time to organize images from the installation I did at Nullspace Gallery before I left. It was a crazed week of building, printing, painting, worrying, packing, and recruiting the help of Sarah, Hal, and Joe to help me pull the whole thing off...not to mention a lovely dinner delivered in the midst of it all by Cam. So, thanks to all for that.

The title of the show was "All Things Near and Far" and it revolved around all things disaster-related.....big ones, little ones, personal disasters, emotional ones, trivial ones, and significant ones.......

A few days ago, I went out to Sugar Bottom near Lake Macbride to study trees. I didn't really think of it much, but I guess what I'm doing sort of feels like a little science experiment. Usually, I compose images, draw the whole, so to speak. Lately, though I have decided to study one thing at a time....to take some time with an individual thing in the spaces I observe...a flower, a plant, a tree...Drawing feels a bit like meditating lately. I like that. It is just such an great intense period of focus like no other part of my day. Someone once said that drawing is like "physical empathy." I could not put it any better.

Today, I decided to stick around the yard at home for my drawing session...mostly because I was waiting for the cable guy to come between 8-12 (which he never did). Oddly, trying to get your cable disconnected is not one of the high priority jobs on the cable company's list. Go figure.

Anyway, I decided to go away from the washy, fluid approach of the last few days and go graphic, using black and white only on one. The light this morning was really amazing and creating these patterns across the leaves.

On the other I did some direct tracing...love love love that static look, and then worked back into it with gouache and ink.

An ink drawing done with a skewer. I had become so accustomed to using my nice lil pen and all the nice lil tips, that I forgot how much I like drawing with ink and q-tips and skewers. Also, it was just a beautiful day in sunny, sunny Florida. Birds chirped, leaves rustled, and a woodpecker provided a percussion-like background beat.

I went out to Kingsley plantation the other day and there were these really beautiful trees. There were also lots of REALLY large spiders! eek. Not a fan!
I did this drawing with walnut ink that Michael Crespo gave me when I was in Baton Rouge for Christmas. It is just so nice to draw with....I think it is fool proof....you could draw anything with it and it would be great. Maybe that's a good challenge...the first person who reads this and posts a suggestion of something else to draw with it...i will do it..in walnut ink...anything! really!...well, maybe not anything..try me!
It is the first time in a long long time that I have had a moment to just sit and draw. lovely. I am happy that summer is finally here!

a great painting of a woman on the shore by Munch, and this Monet painting. I got in trouble at the Art Institute for drawing a picture of an umbrella in my sketchbook while standing in front of this painting. She came behind me, over my shoulder, and it went like this

"You can't do that"

"What?"

"You can't draw in here"

"Can I take notes?"

"In pencil."

So, then, I was freaked out by this ridiculous restriction. If it was the fact that I was not allowed to sit in front of the painting and sketch for hours....okay, but I literally drew the picture of the top of the umbrella and was reprimanded. It was odd. So, then, later when I was drawing a circle around an area of notes that I wanted to highlight, I thought, "Is this legal? when does my note taking become drawing?" It was odd.

I spent the week working on an installation at the gallery at school. We are having a faculty show that opens on Monday. After a couple of sleepless nights, here's what I ended up with. I am happy about it, but fairly uneasy considering I have never done an installation in a solo fashion. Paintallica....yes, but not when all the weight is on me. It was a great experience. I incorporated a lot of screen prints that I have been working since the summer. I think the red fringe makes me happiest though! figures. The reception is on Thursday night.
I injected a few sayings that have been floating around in my mind for a while. A couple of them were overheard words, and some random ones. One reads, "Good Luck in heaven crazy pants"
one on the right reads "it's like we're giants" and "they're drowning" the top reads, "Reduce your amplitude" (solid advice given to me).
This feels more like "me" than the still life paintings for right now. So, I am thrilled that I had the chance to do it.

This morning, I spoke to all of my family, who are luckily safe. There was an unprecedented evacuation on my home town, Houma, as Hurricane Gustav makes landfall. We will know today how bad it is and whether or not their homes were affected. It is scary to say the least.
I was listening to NPR and the coverage of the storm. The reporter said, "New Orleans was not the only city affected by this storm. Let's go to St. Paul, Minnesota where the Republican National Convention has faced a great challenge because of Gustav." Need I say that it is ridiculous to compare what those two cities are about to face. It just seemed so absurd. Also, McCain was on the air making a desperate attempt to disconnect himself from the behavior of our administration during Katrina by paying close attention to this storm. He said, "It is time to take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats as this storm approaches." (that may not be it exactly, but the hat part is correct) Pivotal words.

I wanted to post this drawing too. I made it while we were on the way to the west "coast" of Iowa for the start of RAGBRAI. (The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa)
We stopped at a rest area, and there, to my surprise, was a woman already sporting an entire outfit made of spandex with a fanny pack, and smoking a cigarette! I suddenly felt so unprepared for the ride! Who knew I could have worn the spandex in the car!!!!? and why?! why?! no fanny pack?! I kick myself every time I think of it! There's always next year!

When I was a child, I had a strange habit of wearing this really ugly brown felt hat when my mom would make me clean my room. It was kind of a ritual. Occasionally, I would put on another kind of hat, accessories, whatever I came across in the cleaning process. By then end, I would be sporting an interesting look, but have fairly clean room in the process. The other day, I was cleaning my apartment and realized that I really haven't changed all that much. By the end of the cleaning spree, I had on this fire red, orange and gray silk scarf that I never wear, earrings that I discovered in a bag, and some charcoal colored eye shadow and red, red lipstick that I had forgotten about. It was a lovely look, really! It just made me remember the felt hat. Also, in making the drawing, I remembered that I had this miniature basketball goal that sat on my garbage can. It was battery operated and would cheer when you successfully got paper in the hoop. I think I could use that kind of positive reinforcement now. Maybe I should get one to put on the clothes hamper in my room now.

Before I left Grinnell, David put in a request for a very specific drawing of him and his horses. I hope it fits the bill!! It was great to get to look through my Grinnell pics to get an idea of how to go about drawing this. I cannot say enough nice things about that place and the people there.
During the storm, I watched way too much TV. On one of the "news" channel's storm coverage, a man was interviewed who inhabited a house boat. He lost his boat and everything on it. It was an overall sad story, but he said...." I lost everything...my keys, my teeth, my wallet." There was just something so specific about his list. It needed to be drawn in some fashion.

His name has been changed. :) The boat was really called "Lil" Freedom"

My friend Josh Rush made this piece. I'm not positive if it is oil or pastel, but it is quite lovely either way. I am kind of a sucker for those amazing shadows that occur on blankets of snow. I miss that about living in the wintery Iowa clime. You can look at his website here.

So, this will be quite a lengthy post for today. I just returned from a week of teaching at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where I was a resident artist a few years ago. It was a fantastic week. I had a really outstanding drawing class, and met lots of interesting people over the course of the week.
My class made these amazing drawings in less than two days!! We started them on Thursday afternoon, and they just charged right through making them.

Here are some shots of us in the studio. There were eight of us in the class. These super-drawers were fearless!! They just cranked out drawings. It was really impressive and a lot of fun. They were just so full of energy, great moments of observation, and sporadic marks of invention.

Below is a piece created by one of the current resident artists, Damon Mcintyre. Check out his site. He has quite a range of work, all of which is quite charming and graceful in its creation.

On the way to Tennessee, I made this drawing of girls with earrings. I saw two women over the last couple of weeks with this enormous earrings. They just seemed like something worth drawing. Then, on the way home, I had to take the early...very early shuttle from Arrowmont to the Knoxville Airport and wait for four hours until my flight departed. My little world for several hours was framed by these very narrow airport windows. I must say though, that the Knoxville airport is the only airport I've ever been to with rocking chairs for the travelers to sit in. Lovely.

Mountain Magic

This week, I am at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee teaching a drawing class to a group of fantastic people.
Last night, I found a lovely spot in the middle of the crowds of tourists in downtown Gatlinburg and drew this band. Later, a couple of them came over and talked to me for a bit. Gary and Austin. Good musicians. Very kind. Liked my drawing of them.

Vanity in Shadows and Sexy Red Peppers

A few days ago, Ann roasted these beautiful peppers and made an amazingly yummy assortment of roasted pepper salad dressings. Yum!
Living in an Airstream doesn't afford me the luxury of having a full length mirror around right now. I have this habit at my apartment to always check myself in the mirror as a constant way of seeing if the extra chocolates I ate or the extra running I did the day before affected my body in some way. I am aware of the ridiculousness of my rituals.

However, while running the other morning, I ran in the opposite direction that I usually do and was trailing my shadow as I ran. I caught myself analyzing my shadow with the same intentions. It just felt necessary to fess up to that ridiculous moment of vanity. The same day, Carlos said " There should be a bumper sticker that reads, 'KILL YOUR MIRROR'."

A long overdue drawing .....the view from my bed in the Airstream. Fantastic prairie grass and flowers surround me. So, I captured them and stuck them in a glass to die. Maybe that wasn't the best approach, but maybe they live on in the life of the drawing. Also, watched a Miyazaki film where there was this mesmerizing animation of the Toxic Forest. The textures were so great. It made me want to draw plant-y textural things.

THE PEONIES ARE HERE!!! THE PEONIES ARE HERE!!! In Iowa City, the peonies have started to bloom. They are soooo beautiful and fragrant.

As I was taking the photo of the little drawing alone, I liked the way the shadows fell on the page, and the splotches of paint made me really happy too! The morning light that comes through the print shop window is quite dazzling.

Java House Coffee Shop in downtown IC today. It took them 20 minutes to make my little coffee for some reason. The guy behind the counter gave me a card for a free drink next time. So, there will be another Java drawing soon.

Yesteday, I went to the mall. There was a huge Iowa thunderstorm banging around outside. I didn't buy sunglasses, but I did get bike riding stuff in preparation for RAGBRAI, including a CO2 inflator thing, padded pants, and an intertube for the lovely Motobecane that I'm borrowing. When I got home, it took me about an hour and a half to change the rear tire, and as it turned out the best tool for doing that is a butter knife. So much for those tire hot pink levers that I bought.

Grinnell Journey.

Yesterday, I went to Grinnell. Planted lots of seeds with Carlos for the circus, fell off of a bike, blew out a tire on the same bike, walked a couple of miles with a flat tire bike in tow, ate fresh asparagus and candied ginger , and took lots of pictures during the drive there and back. Here's a drawing I made inspired by the drive on I-80 and Hwy 6.

I made this drawing right before I left Jacksonville. I was running, and stumbled onto this event happening in my street. I had made all these assumptions about what was happening before I reached the spot where the people were standing. I was completely wrong. Here it is.
